  1. Money from colonies

Support of other monarchies in driving out the Moors

It didn't stay powerful very long.

  2. === One could say it started as pure luck. Christopher Columbus had been trying to sell his idea that he could said to Japan by going East. He believed that it was about 2200 miles from the Canary Islands to Tokyo (about the same distance as the length of the Mediterranean Sea) and he could make it in 3 weeks. Most of the educated people correctly believed that the distance was much longer and he would starve to death at sea. When Vasco de Gama discovered that he could sail around Africa to Asia the Portuguese lost interest in Columbus. Henry VIII was almost set to take a chance on him, but he passed. Ferdinand of Aragon (Spain) decided to go against his advisers and financed Columbus on a cut-rate voyage from which most people thought he would never return.

===   Spain ended up finding the most centrally populated and wealthiest portion of the New World. Between 1492 and 1700  all of the extreme wealth of Spain was primarily based on precious metal that it extracted from the New World. Seville became the richest city of it's era.

===  There's a saying that "money makes you poor". Spain became so addicted to this flow of gold and silver that it never developed the more sophisticated economies of the Netherlands and England. When the mine production slowed down about 1700 Spain quickly became one of the most backwards economies of Europe. The War of the Spanish Succession (1701–1714) was a major European conflict about the succession to the Spanish throne. After this war, Spain was minor power.

===  Spain, like Ireland has only become wealthy again in the last 25 years.
