The seeds of the Liberal Party were sown after the UAP (United Australia Party) got caned in the 1943 election. A group of disaffected conservatives met and over a period of about six months, the UAP merged with smaller parties to form the Liberal party in early 1945.

They formed to consolidate power against the ruling Australian Labor Party.
