Why was the Second Amendment placed into the US Constitution?

I know exactly why the Second Amendment is in the Constitution but I want to read your views on the matter.

  1. To Protect this:

    Preamble

    We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.


  2. To keep the government from getting to governmenty, lol but seriously...

    To give us the right to defend ourselves from danger, be it from an animal,  a serious criminal, an invading country, or even our own government; and because they are fun to play with.

  3. Initially the constitution in its entirety was created to keep America from becoming (what it is today) like Britain was to them. They could invade your home (with probable cause they can do that here now) and if in the event of military action they could lodge themselves in your home. (which could be done here without too many problems i'm sure) So they made these ammendments to prohibit this. However if you read every law ever written (which hasn't been done), you'll realize that they all imoralize the constitution. So owning guns is legal to a point, like everything else.

  4. The purpose of the Second Amendment is to keep the Militia well regulated, and if they get out of regulation and armed people can put them right back.

    Tench Coxe said it best;

    "Whereas civil rulers, not having their duty to the people duly before them, may attempt to tyrannize, and as military forces, which must be occasionally raised to defend our country, might pervert their power to the injury of their fellow citizens, the people are confirmed by the article in their right to keep and bear their private arms."

  5. It's evident from the speeches, ratifying debates, and letters of the time that the Second Amendment had a three-fold purpose, all rooted in the natural right of self-defense.

    1) Defense against invasion of the borders by a foreign entity.

    2) Defense against tyranny by the local or federal government.

    3) Defense against criminal attack on property or person.

    As regards the preamble clause "A well regulated Militia..." etc, some try to interpret it as the entire purpose of bearing arms, but in fact such preambles were common at the time and merely set forth one possible application of the basic right.

    It's all very clear with a little digging into the history of the period.
