  1. The most direct answer is that the mob saw this old fortress, which had been turned into a prison, as a symbol of royal power.

    There was also gunpowder and arms stored there and they hoped to obtain access to these. (It being easier to have a revolution if you have guns). Its these arms that the mob demanded when they first surrounded the Bastille.

    The ultimate "why?" is much more difficult and controversial. that is, why was there a revolution in France rather than in England or why wasn't there a revolution in both countries. The fact is, that despite popular accounts, conditions for the common people in both countries were roughly equal.

    The answer may be that while the English upper and middle classes defended the insittution of Monarchy (they had just lost a war to Revolutionaries in their American colonies) their counterparts in France were, at best, divided and many choose to side with Republican ideals (they had, after all, taken the side of those same American colonies).
