  1. The states would not have ratified the Constitution without a Bill of Rights. After years under the "tyrannical" English crown, people wanted to be assured of their individual rights. Most state constitutions contained a Bill of Rights so they felt that the United States Constitution should also contain a Bill of Rights. Therefore, they ammended the Constitution to reflect those rights and it was finally ratified.

  2. The Bill of Rights was added to the Constitution in order that the States would be more willing to ratify the Constitution.  It was not added after the Constitution was ratified.

  3. They were added as they wanted to get the Constitution passed but knew it lacked certain safeguards. Many of those would have refused to have signed it if they had not promised to add the amendments at their 1st session of Congress , which they did!  Back in those days your word was your honor and was kept. There were 12 Amendments. Two were not adopted by the states!

  4. couldn't have been ratified without the promise of the amendments.  i will grant that it was passed before the amendments, but would have been another mess if it hadn't been done

  5. Because it was additional rights that the founding fathers wanted to protect without putting it directly in the Constitution and to make sure that everyone understood those rights.
