  1. the 20's were so bad for Europe because of WWI.  first, the tactics used during the Great War involved trench warfare.  this decimated farm land and turned any battlefield into an absolute wasteland.  the natural environment of these areas still has not recovered completely.  second, the countries that participated were the most powerful in Europe and threw every available resource into the war effort.  this led to a economic depression after the war because all of the money was used to make weapons which were useless after the war was over.  the thriving munitions factories were left with nothing to make, leading to them being closed and many left jobless.  the millions of soldiers returning from war found this situation when they got back leading to even more unemployment.  the entire economic structure of participating countries were in tatters.  the rebuilding process was overwhelming because many were doing it from the ground up.  this was compounded by the fact that any country that did manage to get back on its feet was left with no trade markets in Europe.  this is the case with any disastrous war and the rebuilding process takes many years.  this is how Hitler was able to come into power and how the United States became a true world leader.  finally, national borders were redrawn and ceded territories came under an entirely new government.  empires were dissolved, new countries and governments were created, and for many years several regions has an ambiguous nationality.

  2. Mostly because of WWI. Basically Europe was, for a lack of a better word, got ****** during WWI (ESPECIALLY Germany, which gave way for the election of Hitler). But for the U.S., 1920s was a pretty good time. That was the highest our economic had ever been. But we also had to deal with an influx of crime because of the prohibition of alcohol.
