Why was the election of 1912 so significant?

  1. This was an important election for many reasons.  Teddy Roosevelt ran as a 3rd party candidate, which split the republican vote and gave power to the democrats (for the first time since the Civil War).  This caused World War I to be totally different than it would have been otherwise.  Just as important was Eugene Debb's run as a socialist candidate.  He had a decent chance at winning, and this was the closest America has ever come to socialism, which just a few years later would be considered our biggest enemy.

  3. Theodore Roosevelt running for office under the Bull Moose Party split the Republican vote which resulted in a win for the Democrats.  This was the last election that had three party candidates running for office of the presidency.

  4. The lady above me makes a good point, but also, Wilson allowed for the creation of the Federal Reserve in 1913 which forever changed the way the US and the world's economy works.

    Teddy would not be proud.
