is 2 consecutive outs always a double play? does a double play not need 2 outs at bases? because Kotchman was out because the ball was caught, right?

sorry if these are dumb questions, I'm sort of teaching myself the rules by watching as many games as I can : )

  1. Not sure what "figgins thing" you're referring to, but essentially a double play is when two outs are scored on the same play (the pitcher doesn't throw another pitch between the two outs). The most common double play is when there's a runner on first and the batter hits a ball to an infielder who throws to second base (out #1) and the player there (shortstop or second baseman) then throws to the first baseman before the batter/runner gets there (out #2). One continuous sequence of events = double play.

But the outs don't have to be at bases. If a fly ball is caught (out #1) and then a base runner "tags up" and tries to advance to another base (usually home) he can be tagged out (out #2). Again, one sequence with two outs.

Another example: batter strikes out and the catcher throws to second or third to catch a runner who was trying to steal. One pitch, two outs = double play.

There can also be a triple play, but that's very rare.

  2. If two outs are on bases and the same play or time then it is considered a play and yes

  3. Any play that results in 2 outs in any manner is considered a double play.

There are some common double plays such as a grounder that creates a force out at 2nd and a force out at 1st, but ANY play that gets 2 outs is considered a double play.

  4. im not sure what is considered a double play

i know if they get the out at 1st then 2nd its a double play

or when a guy catches a ball and then throws to a base where the guy didnt tag up is a double play

and when a guy strikes out and a base stealer gets thrown out on the same pitch its a double play

i would guess that if two outs are made on one play or one pitch then its a double play

  5. As long as only two outs are made on a play then it is considered a double play. Of, course there are a million different ways to turn double plays. If there is three outs made on a play it is called triple play. As long as there are three outs made on a play it is classified as a triple play.

  6. There is no requirement that both outs have to come on the bases. A double play is any play in which two outs are recorded, no matter how it is done. In your case, Kotchman was the first out when the second baseman caught the ball. Figgins was the second out recorded on that play when he was doubled off first base.

    Hope this helps!!!!! :)
