Several times during a concert last night, the lead singer's guitar was changed for a different one. Why is this done? Thanks.

  1. some guitars were made for different genres. and after playing it for a few hours, it doesn't stay in tune unless you tune it afterevery song.

  2. Too bad you didn't say what the group was... I've noticed a lot of groups play musical guitars all night long... it's OK, but can be a bit distracting

The other answes have it... there can be any number of reasons for changing guitars and all those answers are valid...  Another reason is to get the feel of a 'fresh' guitar in your hands... when it's so hot you can't hold onto the pick, the guitar gets yuckie too.

  3. Guitars rapidly go out of tune. In a two hour stretch of playing they may need tuning 2-3 times. In addition there are many tunings, and perhaps the singer used guitars set to different tunings.

  4. Gutiars go out of tune after you've been playing for awhile, and some songs might be played out of alternate tunings, like drop-D or open G or whatever -- so to avoid wasting time on stage retuning or switching from standard to open G tuning for example, you'd have multiple guitars.

Also, different makes and models of guitars sound different, so you might use different guitars on different songs for that reason.

And if you break a string on stage its really handy to have a spare guitar so you don't have to waste time changing the string onstage.

  5. im assuming for some songs require different tunning of the strings and that instead of having to pull out a tunner and tune his guitar for 5 minutes in front of the crowd lol they have other guitars that are already tuned.

  6. Every song I play calls for a specific guitar. It has nothing to do with tuning, because they are all in tune. Always. If not, I can  easily tune a string or two quickly, even in the middle of a song.

All of my guitars play and sound slightly different and it is having access to all these sounds that makes for more interesting music.

If it were just a tuning thing, you'd see guitarists on stage with five guitars lined up... all of them exactly the same brand, model, etc.
