Why was the laser sailboat invented?

why was it invented (purpose) and what are some good sites about them?? how does it work??

The Laser was built as a single handed, one design, competition dingy. It has two different rigs, the Radial rig being for lighter sailors. The Laser is a  fast fun boat that is not very technical, and easy to sail. google Laser sailboats for links to many Laser Sites.
