i was wanting to know the reasons why the communists won and the americans lost. i have basic points- communist were prepared for a war of attrition better than the americans, americans soldiers didn't have the heart for the job, the ARVN (south Vietnamese army) were unwilling and ill prepared to fight against the guerilla tactics of the VietCong. it there anything else. i have to fill a 5 minute speech.

  1. Actually, i read a lot about wars, especially this war, and i had a PC game about it!!...lol, anyway, The communist doesn't want to give up and they were being supplied weapons and supplies from China, Cambodia, and Laos.

In U.S. , many people are opposing the war and request that the president withdraw from the war, and riots start to form on the street, a lot of Policemen had to be sent to stop these people, a few high school campus students were even killed for opposing the war. At first someone suggested using the atomic bomb to end everything, but the president opposed the idea. After a president took over the previous one, he ordered all men to withdraw from Vietnam, leaving the communist to win the war.

  2. The First two answers are dead on the target.

  3. The left wimped out , and the Soviet Union was bank rolling the Anti-war movement which wore down the support on the home front.

  4. American soldiers had the heart for the job. They won every major engagement they were involved in. The US military did not lose that war, the politicians did.

In the Christmas bombings of 1972, we lost several B-52's because the politicians were calling the moves. We were going in at the same heading and altitude for all our strikes. Any fool could zero the rockets and missiles in on them. Air crews at Anderson AFB, Guam, refused to fly until the altitudes and headings were made variable. They won, on Christmas Day, 1972, they resumed flights.

One of the things which amazes me is the ignorance of people about what was going on. The 1972 election was much about a war which had already ended. The last Marine combat unit, Marine Air Group 39, was moved out of Da Nang to Nam Phong, Thailand in July, 1972. The last Army combat unit left in August. Hanoi Jane, as much as I dislike her I must include this for historical accuracy, visited North Vietnam after our last combat forces were gone from Vietnam.

Now, to the causes of the loss of Vietnam to the North Vietnamese, we could have won had we upheld the ceasefire agreement. In the agreement, we were supposed to support the South Vietnamese if North Vietnam attacked them. We did not honor this agreement. In 1972, North Vietnam atacked South Vietnam and we supported them with air support. The NVA took Hue, the old provincial capitol of Quang Tri province. They took the old Marine base at Phu Bai and set up SAM missiles there. Remember, the US would stand by and watch the communists set up a SAM missile site and not attack it. We provided air support from ships after our base at Da Nang was closed. The South Vietnamese defeated the North Vietnamese. The North Vietnamese took another 3 years to build its forces and decide the US would not oppose them.

When the NVA attacked in 1975, President Ford ignored our committment to Vietnam. He offered no assistance. Had we offered air support, it is probable the South Vietnamese would have prevailed as they did in 1972.
