  1. You must not have seen the fight. Holmes destroyed him. It's doubtful Cooney wanted a re-match.

For the record, neither of them were bums. Cooney had skills. He just wasn't quite at the caliber of a world champion. Holmes is among the most underrated fighters of all-time--a definite top ten heavy weight of all time.

  2. because noone wanted to see those 2 bums fight again. Talk about a lousy couple of heavyweights!

  3. I think because Holmes destroyed him & after that it was shown that Cooney could throw a heck of a shot but he couldn't take one.  Cooney was setup to fail,  he fought nothing but bums & then beat a over the hill Ron Lyle & an over the hill Ken Norton & everyone thought he was the next heavyweight champion.  The worst thing about this matchup is that everyone & I mean everyone wanted to see the next great white hope.  If Holmes didn't KO him Cooney might have won on points.   One judge had it 115-109 & the other two had it 113-111 all for Holmes but that was after Cooney had 3 points taken away for low blows.   This was pathetic, Holmes won about 10 of the 13 rounds & should have been way ahead after the low blows.   I think Holmes didn't want the chance to have the public take his title away from him!!!!

  4. Cooney went into a spiral over losing.  I think he only fought once more after Holmes took him apart.  He went from America's hope, a 6'5" Rocky, to a punchline in a joke.  Made a couple of comebacks, but lost both.  Also had cocaine addiction trouble, too.  It was cruel to put so much pressure on a person only to dismiss him after failing.

  5. While their fight was competitive, Holmes was a clear winner with a TKO victory.

After losing, Cooney had a number of problems, especially psychologically after he was built up so big and then crushed.  He ended up fighting Michael Spinks and getting destroyed.

If there was a Cooney-Holmes rematch, Holmes would have won in a dominant, one-sided manner, probably within 5-6 rounds.
