  1. The protests were over China's policies toward Tibet.  Routes were probably changed to avoid these protests.

  2. It wasn't about being in San Francisco.

  3. The changed the route to try to get around Protesters.

The protests were occurring because of China's deplorable human right's records, and because they rule Tibet (which they invaded), which many people believe should be an independent nation.

  4. The controversy is with China.

Because everyone is pissed at China for treating Tibet like c**p.  If the Olympics stand for unity for the world and brings everyone together then China shouldn't participate for treating Tibet like garbage. Have you heard the term FREE TIBET?  Tibet needs to be freed from China. Even the Dalai Llama threatened to resign because of the violence in Tibet from China.

SF being a very strong city that protests everything and is filled with human rights activists made the torch run difficult because we all need to boycott the olympics to support Tibet. This all would have been a different story if the olympics were in the U.S. or another country.

So anything Olympics related chouldn't be supported, purchased or watched because China will get more revenue from it which they can use to take over Tibet.
