  1. Because anywhere english is spoken there will be

    enough solar surface showing to burn your retinas

    if you stare at the event.

    Looking directly at the sun will damage your eyes,

    and you might need them later.

  2. Even though much of the solar disk is covered during an eclipse, a sliver of the sun is still bright and intense enough to cause damage to your eye.

    Remember taking a magnifying glass to paper & leaves and burning them with sunlight? That's essentially what the lense in your eye does to your retina.... so... don't look at the sun.

  3. Observing the Sun can be dangerous if you do not take the proper precautions. The solar radiation that reaches the surface of Earth ranges from ultraviolet (UV) radiation at wavelengths longer than 290 nm to radio waves in the meter range. The tissues in the eye transmit a substantial part of the radiation between 380 and 1400 nm to the light-sensitive retina at the back of the eye. While environmental exposure to UV radiation is known to contribute to the accelerated aging of the outer layers of the eye and the development of cataracts, the concern over improper viewing of the Sun during an eclipse is for the development of "eclipse blindness" or retinal burns.

  4. You should not look at the sun without protection EVER, even during a Lunar Eclipse. It isnt necessarily the light that is harmful to your eyes, it is the UV rays. And they can cause Permanent Eye Damage. However, contrary to popular belief, it is VERY hard to Go blind by staring at the sun. But it is very dangerous and can cause lots of problems.

  8. The reason that solar eclipses are particularly bad is this:

    We evolved with a protection mechanism that prevents us from looking at the Sun for too long---the full Sun is so bright, it hurts, and we look away.

    However, the thing that causes eye damage is not the full brightness of the Sun, it is the "surface brightness" of any small area of the Sun.  It's the brightness per area on the retina that does damage, not the total brightness of the whole Sun.

    The only time that there is a small area of the Sun exposed, but the Sun does not have its full brightness, is during the partial phase of a solar eclipse.  The brightness of the Sun is reduced, so it doesn't hurt to look, but the areas of the Sun that are exposed still have their full surface brightness and will cause damage.  Protection against this did not evolve, because normally a human would never see an eclipse even once during his/her lifetime.

    The partial phase of a solar eclipse is the only time our natural defense mechanism against eye damage does not work---you can look at the Sun, and it won't hurt, but you're still damaging your eyes.

  9. Just because you should never look directly at the sun, even though some claim it's harmless.  Better safe than sorry.  It could burn out your retinas.
