  1. one of those things that evolved.  The first person who built a battery had to draw it somehow.

    Initailly schematics were pictograms of the components connected by wires, indicated by lines. This evolved to what we have now.

    A resistor is still a zigzag line indicating resistance. A cap is two parallel lines, indicatiing how a cap is made.
