Because  those Olympic Games were performed 8 years ago.  This year's Olympic Games are also being performed during Summertime at a time when the host city could schedule them.  Every other Olympic Games period falls in the Wintertime at the convenience of  the city bidding for the privilege to schedule them.

it was in Sydney in 2000.  Sydney is in the Southern Hemisphere where it's summer in December and winter in July.
