Why were the American athletes wearing different gear today?

Question

They´ve been in blue all week and today they wore red vests in the relay.

Why?

I think it has something to do with Red, White and Blue the colors of the flag maybe.

I have come to this Q three times and not answered because I don't really know, but.....  Could it be because they have slightly different kits for different events?

Well apparently there is a Red USA relay team and a Blue USA relay team.

These answers aren't up to much eh? One power crazed TC and two virus links.....lol!

Could it be that the colour blue vests had too higher a representation within the relay finalists? I feel I could have worded that better....
