  1. I am guessing that the main objection the French would have had with Jay's Treaty is that it allowed unrestricted navigation of the Mississippi River, which, until the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, the French may have considered to be their domain.  (13 states were later carved out of the former French territory.)The French, over time, established "spite colonies" along the Mississippi River and parts of its other territoory in what is now the United States.  Many of them had French names, such as  New Orléans, Baton Rouge, St. Louis, Illinois and Detroit.  A "spite colony" was, as its name suggests, not a serious settlement as much as a reminder to others, especially the United States, that the French were still present and a force to be dealt with.

The main purpose of Jay's Treaty, which was concluded between the United States and Great Britain, was to settle difficulties which had arisen out of the Treaty of Paris in 1783 as well as to regulate commerce and navigation.  The French may have felt that too many concessions had been given to Great Britain, its longtime rival.  Great Britain, for example, through Jay's Treaty, was granted equal privileges to vessels in Great Britain and in the East Indies.  The outcome of the treaty, furthermore, did not secure recogniton of the principles of international maritime law.

The French at the time did not have particularly cordial relations with either Great Britain or the United States.

  2. When the USA and France signed their Alliance in 1777, remember

this was during the American war for Independence, we were fighting

for our independence and Franklin got us an alliance with France, we

needed French help. now however , France was at war with ALMOST

ALL, of Europe, thanks to their Revolution. G. Washington, the

President of the USA, knew that a war with the British would be

disastrous for the USA. We were a small backwoods country with

a 5,000 man army and maybe 5 warships. Britain had a huge army,

compared to ours and over 100 warships. We would have gotten

stomped on. Washington sent Jay over to britain to see if our

problems with Britain could be worked out. The Treaty Jay came back

with was not that great, it did not speak to impressment or the

seizing of our sailors by Britain or give us much in fair trade BUT IT

did stop the USA from going to war and that is what France objected

to, they wanted the USA, their Ally to fight the English. Fortunately

the USA did not fight the war. The France replied by seizing our ships

sailing towards Britain for trade. We responded to the French seizures

by sending out our navy, now up to 15 ships to fight the French navy.

Which they did quite successfully, during the term of J. Adams as

    president.

                        Hope that helps. Packers.

  3. It seems that they would be angry because it allowed for British troops that occupied America to be moved back across the Atlantic to support the British during the French Revolution.  According to what I have read, the Jay Treaty was enacted the same year that the French and British came to war.  The treaty gave the British a lot of concessions and allowed the Americans very few.  It opened up more trade for the goods back and forth.  Also provided more trade from Britain.  During a time of war one tactic would be to put as tight a hold on money filtering into the enemy treasury as possible.  The upgraded trade allowed for the British to continue to fund its war with France.  Also the French had come to the aid of the Americans during the Revolutionary War so this might have stuck in their craw as well.  In the end after about a decade all this work was for nothing.  The War of 1812 came along and all the work that John Jay was void.

  4. Who are the French? Must be some stupid unimportant country. But as for Jay's Treaty, it was the Americans and Spanish who were angry about it. US citizens felt that the treaty was too beneficial to Britain and detrimental to the US. Spain was upset that the US was forming treaties with its enemy, Britain, so they then signed Pickney's Treaty with the US to even things up. This treaty was much better for the US, so historians believe that Jay's Treaty was actually a blessing in disguise. As for these "French", if they were angry, it was probably for the same reason as Spain.
