  1. because they were turned into MARSOC

  2. They are now part of MARSOC units...

RECON is still available to those who wish to try for it. And one can also try for MARSOC once in the FMF.

  3. to make way for marsoc

  4. Because the for Secretary of Defense decided that he wanted them to play along with SOCOM.  Most of the Marines from 1st and 2d Force Recon Companies ended up in the MSOB on whichever coast they were currently stationed.  The rest went to 1st or 2d MarDiv ReconBn and constituted the DRP platoons like they had in the 80s.  The Marine Corps has for a while deactivated and reactived the active duty Force Recon Cos off and on over the years.  A major part of MARSOC isn't even the former Force Marines, it's the Foriegn Training Units.  The came over from 4th MEB (AT) when it was disbanded, yet again.

  5. LIke everyone stated...a portion of the both companies integrated in the MSOBs in the establishment, and the remaining FORECON Marines were placed within the Division-level Recon Battalions, forming the Deep Recon Platoons, since Division Recon only conducted Close and Distant Reconnaissance.  However I had a very inspiring email from a fellow Marine that I was with back in my days in 2nd FORECON that they are going to reactivated those two FORECON Companies once again, since they crippled MEF because of the disbandment.  I wasn't very happy to be placed in the Division; I decided to take the opportunity and go reserves since then, with the 4th Recon Bn. (it was close to my both hometowns!)
