  1. The Ottoman Empire had exhausted itself militarily, economically, and morally due to several hundred years of continuous aggression against the Europeans, who finally had enough.

  2. The Ottoman empire declined due to the rise of nationalism, and the discovery of the New WOrld.  (2 other factors were the rise of Russia, and decline/end of Janissary system)

The rise of nationalism meant people in the very-tolerant empire were no longer content with the rights given them by the 'millet' system...People wanted their own nation,or area comprising people of the same ethnic background.  The first step here was the departure of Egypt, under Mohammed Ali, in the early 19th century.  When Greece rebelled in 1830, she got her independence with a lot of European help.

The New WOrld meant two problems for the TUrks: 1) Her main source of wealth, which was trade through the Middle East between Asia and Europe, steadily declined, and 2) The New World provided Europe with added resources for any conflict with the Turks.

As for the other factors, by the 19th century the rise of Russia was a great problem for the Turks; as this stopped her progress in the Black sea/Caucusus, was a competitor for trade from Asia, and stepped in to support any Turkish-occupied state in the Balkans that chose to leave the empire.  The decline and end of the Janissary troops in 1826 - once  a highly-feared elite military force, among the first to use firearms - caused greater problems.

By the early 20th century, Europe supported any nationalist urgings in what remained of the Turkish empire in the Middle East.  Kamel Ataturk then built Turkey into a nation-state.

  3. They failed to keep pace with advances in Western technology and economic structures.  They ignored growing calls for greater autonomy and independence within their empire which allowed their enemies to turn their subjects against them.  They also had an outmoded political system that could not deliver the necessary reforms to remedy their problems.  Corruption was rife, and talent and merit went unrewarded.

  4. Before I answer, answer me this. Have you heard of the 'Battle of Vienna' or the 'Battle of Leponto' (hope I have the last one spelled correctly)

Your answer has great bearing on your question.
