because it's from your own body and just not offensive to you.  my brother (when much younger) would pass gas in bed then stick his head under the covers to smell it.

Gas smells different depending on how close stool is to your a**s. If it's close (ready to come out soon), the gas will smell like a B.M. But if the stool is far up in the intestine, then the gas will be milder and smell more like mucus - and that's really not a bad smell.
