  1. because your not hitting it with the tip of your hand.

    this is the right way:

    http://www.macalester.edu/athletics/voll...

in that picture she is using the tips of her fingers.

  2. This means that you are hitting the volleyball with your palms...this is BAD.  This can also be called a "carry".  You need to work on and practice using ONLY your finger tips...and making your set "soft".

  3. you are most likely carrying it.  Probably you are hitting it with your palms, because you have your hands straight and too high up.  Make a triangle with your hand and keep your arms bent a little, and don't put your arms straight up.  keep it loose.

  4. The above answers could be right.  You could be hitting it with your palm.  Or it could be the pads of the fingers instead of the fingertips.

You could also be having a problem with your feet.  Make sure you are in position quickly and you would like to be stopped when you get the ball.  If you are late, your hands will not be good.

You want to make your hands in the shape of a volleyball as your ready position.  You want your first fingers and thumbs in the shape of a triangle (or diamond if your thumbs are at a slight angle)  Have your practice partner put the ball in your hands.  And then take it out.  Your hands should not change.  Many younger setters move their hands to get them into the ready position.  My question is always WHY????  Get them into the shape of a volleyball and leave them there.  (I am not saying run all the way across the court with your hands in the ready position.  I am saying that you should get them into the ready position early.)  Now, get your practice partner toss the ball to you.  Catch it.  Hold it for several seconds.  Look at your feet.  Are your knees bent?  Are your elbows bent?  Then, throw the ball back to your partner.  Do it again.  Do not be in a hurry to set the ball.  Again, hold it for several seconds.  Do this at least 10 times at this speed.  Now, try it a little faster.  I am talking still holding it for 2 seconds.  Ten times.  Then try to hold it for 1 second.  Ten times.  Now, try setting the ball.  If you still here your noise.  Start over.

    I hope this helps.

  5. you need to curve your fingers up and hit it with your fingers instead of your palm

  6. yeah..or they can call it a lift..the problem is that you are using too much of ur palm..setting is more use of your fingertips these are some hints for setting:

-you should form more of a triangle with your 2 thumbs and your index fingers

-you should use more legs than arms....using your legs gives the ball its height and your arms give the ball the direction that it goes

-you should always face your target

    - keep your wrists flexible

    here...these are more tips!:

  7. Make sure you're hitting it with your fingers, not your palm. Absorb the ball and set out, using your fingers. It can also be directing, if you are trying to "push" it.

  8. Instead of thinking "hit" the ball - think "catch and release." And like others have said here, use your finger tips.  Your hands should make a diamond shape above and in front of your forehead. Practice getting to the ball with your hands in that diamond position, stop your feet, bend your knees, then deal with the ball.

Practice on your floor at home. Lay down and set the ball to yourself over your forehead - remember to make the diamond shape with your hands/fingers.   A good set can actually be made with ONLY the thumb and forefinger.

  9. Maybe it is because your palms hit the ball. You should hit the ball with your fingure tips.

  10. YOU ARE NOT HITTING IT AT THE RIGHT PLACE ON YOUR HAND. FINGER TIPS ONLY.REALLY WHEN YOU ARE SETTING THE BALL ONLY YOUR THUMB INDEX AND MIDDLE SHOULD BE TOUCHING IT AND MAKE SURE YOUR THUMB AND INDEX MAKE A TRIANGLE. I HAVE A DRILL THAT WILL HELP. LAY FLAT ON YOUR BACK AND HOLD THE BALL INFRONT OF YOUR FACE IN THE CORRECT HAND PLACEMENT. NOW SET THE BALL STRAIGHT UP THIS WILL NOT ALLOW YOU TO SLAP AND WILL ALSO HELP DEVELOP BALL CONTROL. WHATS THE SAYING KILL TO  BIRDS WITH ONE STONE? OK I HOPE I HELPED YOU.

  11. your hitting the ball with the palm of your hand instead of using your fingers to cushion the ball and push it outwards again....to fix this just ask your coach to work with you one on one to make sure you dont cost the team any more points

  12. well I thing you are hitting it with your hands or palms. You want to hit the ball on your fingertips. Get with your coach or friend and set over a net. If you are alone, try hitting against a wall. That should help some!

  13. youre probably slapping at the ball. a set should really make no sound at all. when youre setting make sure youre

    -right foot is always forward

    -lean forward a litte

-start with knees bent, and stand up as you set

-make sure your hands are bend back far enough so that you can see wrinkles in your wrist

-practice holding the ball with your hands on either side of those squares on the ball-that's how far they should be apart when youre setting

    -use mostly your fingertips

-when youre setting, you should be going to either the outside hitter, middle hitter, or right side hitter to set up for a spike.

-always square up, follow through with your arms extended like superman, and get to the ball with your feet so that youre not leaning as you set

-your hands should start near your forehead at the beginning of a set

  14. you must be hitting the ball with the palm of your hand to make the slapping noise.  you should really be hitting the ball with the cushion part (bottom of your hand) on the bottom/middle of the ball.  does it make sense?

  15. you're putting too much hand/finger/palm surface on the ball. only use your fingertips and cushion it. dont keep it in you're hands for too long, cuz then dats wat they call a lift (aka "push"). curve your fingers more so you're palms r outta da way

  16. Don't listen to the first answer, its wrong. The others are right, just pump the ball instead of slapping at it. Bring it down first. If it has spin it will be called a double. If you take it too low, it will be called a lift.

  17. Its called "bad hands"

You will need to develop your setting technique better.  You want the ball to come out of your hands with minimal to no rotation.  It sounds like you are hitting the ball with your palms.  When I set the middle, index, and thumb should be all that is making contact with the ball

    Good Luck

  18. when you slap the ball it is called a push because you are basically double hitting the ball. when you set it right it should not have a sound unless it is very lit if that. i hope that that has answered your question but the reff will call it because that is also not the correct way to hit the ball.

  19. when i coach players i always use this example.. and it really helps...

pretend you are holding a jug of water in front of you... now flip it above your head(like you are pouring it over your head)

your thumbs should be facing your eyes.  when you finish your thumbs should face the sky.

therefore you should never hear that slapping sound because your palms never touch the ball.

also what i did to prepare for my season is setting the ball up against the wall 100 times every couple hours.  the more repitions you get in the better.
