  1. The real reason is that keeping cabin lights dim makes it easier to see outside the aircraft, which is important if an emergency evacuation is required (you have to be able to see which exits are clear, whether there is any fire or debris outside, and so on).

Lights are dimmed for landing for the same reason.

  2. Actually a magneto is for delivering the high intensity spark to the spark plugs and that is only on reciprocating engine aircraft; gas turbine aircraft use and exciter box and igniter plug.  Either the AC Alternator or DC Generator delivers electrical power to the aircraft.

  3. So the plane is able to focus all energy on the power of the take off instead of powering a magneto which in turn powers the lights....

  4. It has nothing to do with the electrical capabilities of the aircraft but rather psychology...

Dim lighting instead of darkness or bright lighting is calming to most people thus easing the tensions in the passengers who are not comfortable with flying.

With engines running the aircraft is more than capable of lighting up a small town if wired the right way

  5. if at night, the lights are turned off to enable peoples eyes to foucus, in the event of an emergency which requires evacuation.
