  1. Its just an illusion...................................

  2. I'm guessing you mean such as watching a waggon wheel in a movie??

If so, the effect is caused by "stroboscoping". This occurs when the camera shutter captures a frame, but by the time it catches the next frame, the wheel has rotated, in the "backwards" case, a spoke position is captured such that the spoke appears to be behind the first frame. It depends on the camera shutter speed (24 frames/ second?) and the rotational speed of the wheel.

In industry in particular, a flashing light can be shone on a rotating wheel/ object, and the viewer sees a stationary picture of the wheel/ object. The flash rate just needs to match the RPM of the object to be looked at, either at the same rate, 1/2 the rate, 1/4 the rate etc. Best effect is when the object rotation and the flash rate are the same.

The light only illuminates the wheel/ object when it has come to exactly the same position its next time around. Increase the flash rate a little, and the whell will appear to go slowly backwards. Decrease the flash rate and the wheel will appear to rotater slowly forwards. Compre??
