  1. It is just the most heard of and most reported on. Lot's of people in the US may think of New Orleans Mardi Gras....or Key West Fantasy Fest. Most countries celebrate some sort of carnival. Last one I attended was in Peru around Feb 18th. Been to others in Panama, Colombia, and other not so big as Rio. Will hopefully one day get there.

  2. Because it is the biggest celebration and most everyone knows where Rio is.  It's celebrated throughout the Caribbean also.

  3. Carnaval is the world's most awesome party!  For Brazilians, its a time of forgetting your worries and just having fun.  Most Brazilians live below poverty line, its an awful thing, but Carnaval offers a chance for them to forget all of that.  And you'll find that these people are suffering socially and economically, but they are some of the most warm, friendly people in the world.   If you evr get the chance to visit Rio during Carnaval, you're in for a once in a lifetime experience!

  4. that is the capital city of Carnival. it is the biggest and the best.

  5. When I think of Carnival I actually think of Carnival de Barranquilla (Colombia) ....  Carnival is all over latin america .

  6. Rio is the most glamorous and televised part of the Carnival. However, I can think of the carnival in Venice (Italy), then the one in Bahia (Brasil) to me is most popular than Rio, there's Cartagena's carnival (Spain), Gualeguaychu's carnival (Argentina) and so on. There's carnival in any country celebrating Lent.

  7. It happens to be not only the biggest carnival celebration in the world, but the parade in Rio is 'the world's biggest parade'. If you ever decide to go be aware that it's nothing like you've ever seen in your life. Absolutely insane experience.
