  1. With no offense meant to you at all, I want to assume you are young, and have more been involved with contemporary theater. I don't even want to insult the thousands of young who come here every day, but I could ask and say the same things about pieces such as HSM 1/2/3,,,etc.

So many of you, might so benefit from GETTING IT, with regard to what CLASSIC, live performance theater is all about.

Obviously societal evolution drives variations on themes to a point of being timely and topical, but so much like KARMA,,, What goes around, comes around,,, though just portrayed in a different way.

Certainly the Film industry is a great example of

ad-nuaseum, yet we pay to go to theaters, even to witness an idea only modestly altered. We even submit to $7 buckets of popcorn, produced and packaged for pennies.

I am curious however, so as to not be confused by possible stats you're aware of that I may not be? How many is "So Many"?

If you enjoy and study theater you might notice a THEME that runs consistently, and in some abstract sense could be considered a "revival"

    West Side Story

    Grease

    Street Car named Desire

    Rent

    Chicago

    Guys and Dolls

    Etc.

As well as others such as the mind draining HSM series of "Mickey" productions.

  3. I've wondered the same thing myself, because I don't particularly care for the show myself.

Still, it's one of the few big-name musicals that has significant roles for three women; there are a lot that barely feature one or two.  And the roles are women with strength, ambition, complexity and intelligence - qualities often missing from older shows in particular. It's a star vehicle for "women of a certain age,"  who no longer can play the ingenue, but aren't ready to fade into the background as anything but character roles start to dry up in the standard repertoire.

It has a couple good tunes, appeals directly to the showbiz audience in its portrayal of stardom, what it takes to get there, and what happens to people (especially stage parents) who can't make it on their own, but live vicariously through their children. That as much as the abundance of female lead roles could explain its longevity.

You know, I've just about convinced myself that it's a pretty good show! I still don't care for it very much, but I can see why it's hung around.
