  1. He didn't ask about torrents, he didn't ask what the difference between uploading and downloading was. The computer you're downloading from needs information from your computer, such as where the file is being downloaded to, or that you haven't timed out. A computer has to have a destination for a file it's uploading (file you're downloading.) So when you download, your computer sends (uploads) packets back to the computer you are downloading from so that the uploader knows that your computer is still downloading. Make sense?

  2. To download is to receive data from a remote or central system, such as a webserver, FTP server, mail server, or other similar systems.

The opposite operation, to upload, is to send data from a local system to a remote system, FTP server, or website. For example, "Uploading a video means sending a video to the website.

The difference between uploading and downloading is downloading means to receive and uploading means to send.

  3. If you are stealing a program using a P2P program like a BitTorrent client, you are expected (and sometimes obligated) to share the file with others as well. Hence the "sharing" part.
