  1. Nearly all ripe, fresh and complete fruits and vegetables float in water, because they contain air in their peels, tissues or in inner cavities.

    Some fruits, those of Bulrush, Typha latifolia e.g. have fluffy hairs outside which enables them to swim as far as possible away from mother plant. In time of 2-3 days the floccus is soaked, the fruits sinks and can germinate at the bottom of the pond f.e.

    If you peel an orange or lemon, it will sink too.


  2. it's whether or not the middle core of the fruit is a solid or open.

    the hollow space in the middle causes it to float.
