Why are these records allowed to be secret when running for office?

This is a very Good question, as what has been released is in fact far from the Whole truth!

The first answerer asks, why you would want to know, the very fact that they have asked this indicates a great problem with the concept of Democratic process!  If they think about this they will find the answer which they seek.

There is no reason of National security for which these should be still secret, however the is good reason for them not to be!

The true has to be of importance or everybody will live a lie!

The most important thing is to start off open and honest and go on from there, if not God know where you will be lead!

Why it is necessary to delve so deeply into the lives of the candidates.  What we should be looking at is how they are going to save the US and regain the US reputation as a super power, not worry about a candidate's military records.  Our country is so screwed up right now we need to focus on what is important and that is getting the balance back where it belongs.

The military released a handful of documents relating to McCain's medals and citations.  The problem is that they had page numbers like "692" and "400".  They were obviously incomplete and didn't even include his multiple flight mishaps.  McCain lost two planes for no known reason and ran a third through power lines in Spain (he also lost two others, but they were not his fault).  The point is that one can be sure that would be in the military files.  McCain talked openly about it in his autobiography.

Also, the records would show that he was no hero.  There are declassified military intercepts all over the web where he gave interviews to the press, etc.  Some of it divulged military information.  Once again I'll refer you back to his autobiography, Faith of my Fathers where he tells the story of his father hearing him broadcasting propaganda over Radio Hanoi.

Any one not willing to pick up his book in the library, or buy it should not dispute what I am saying here.  The Pentagon knows that McCain is much more military-friendly than Obama and they won't be releasing anything without McCain's signature on the request (which is the policy for all records of former POWs).
