Why won't Nancy Pelosi allow a vote on drilling for oil?

She was really anxious to adjourn the House for their summer break. I heard her try to answer the question to George Stephanopolis, but it did not make any sense. So why wouldn't she allow it?

  1. The proposed drilling benefits the Oil Companies rather than the consumer.

  2. She is a Democrat and don't take this the wrong way.... but they can't get anything done in congress

  3. Because this is a "cause celebre" right now, and people need time to cool off and come to their senses.  Drilling offshore, or in ANWR, will not make any difference in oil and gasoline prices in the short term, and even in the long term the effect will be negligible.  This is according to analysts from the oil industry itself, not from environmentalists, or some other "green" organization (see link for one of many articles on this subject).

The problem with drilling offshore was brought home quite effectively in  the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.  Over 100 offshore oil rigs were destroyed, and altogether some 6.5 million gallons of oil was spilled into the Gulf of Mexico as a result of destroyed rigs, undersea pipelines, holding facilities, etc.  Opening up more offshore areas to drilling will create the risk of further spills, without significantly affecting the price of oil and gasoline.  In other words, the risks are not offset by potential returns.

But hey, I work for a "major oil company," the one, in fact, that just recently posted the largest profit -- not income, profit -- for a single quarter that any company has ever posted.  If my company, and others, are allowed to drill offshore and in ANWR, they will make even more money.  So by all means, let's drill offshore.  I'm planning to retire in a few years, so the better my company's stock price is, the better for me.

  4. Because this is not as important to her. She is a Democrat.

  5. Because the oil industry already has land they are allowed to drill on. They don't need more. That is Pelosi's view.

  6. Because she has just been working so hard up there in Washington. She just couldn't work any longer to allow another vote. She really needs her 5 week break. Bless her heart!!!

  7. becasue she knows its just a gimmick. there is very little hope that it would actually lower gas prices( when was the last time the oil companies did something benevolent?)

#2 they spill oil all the time, and no one wants to ruin the environment-except republicans

#3 if it did help, it would take years and years

  8. because she is a parnoid fool with too much power!

  9. because as long as gas is high and food and electric and the economy is bad the dimwit's can say look at what bush hs caused

  10. She is selling her GM stock short.
