Question:

Why won't Photoshop open my raw camera pics?

I'm shooting with a Canon G9 for my digital shots (I also have film SLR cameras), and have it saving a JPG + an uncompressed image when I shoot a picture. But Photoshop only loads the JPG, even though it has "camera raw" listed on its open menue. How do I get my raw, uncompressed images recognized?

  1. well, make sure your photoshop has updated it's camera raw file system. Because each camera/brand has slightly different ways of saving the RAW data, you need to have your photoshop support the camera you're using.

However, I'm not sure they make any more raw updates for photoshop that's not CS3...

  2. Log on to Adobe's website and look for the RAW updates from your version of Photoshop.  It may be that your version is too old to use with the RAW update for the Canon G9.

CS2's RAW updates can provide processing for up to the D200 and D2x ... in order to process the RAW images produced by D3's, D300's and D700's (don't know about the D60) you have to upgrade to CS3.

Adobe will let you know if you need to upgrade your version of PS in order to process RAW files from your G9 ... that said, Canon shipped some software that you can use to process the Canon RAW files ... once processed, you can use the TIFF or JPEG files in Photoshop.

  3. If you're using CS2, download the Adobe Digital Negative converter (here http://www.adobe.com/products/dng/index.... ) and convert your RAW into DNG file, then CS2 can open it.

If you have CS3 (or Adobe Lightroom 1.41), it will open just about all sorts of RAW files.
