Maren: there care many more democrats in congress than republicans and all they seem inspired to do is attack anything the president says or proposes. Besides, even Al Gore was a lame duck when in office.

  1. if congress enacts such legislation, then the US government has to fund the project.  That would mean that your taxes would go up.

Voluntary recycling doesn't involve the wastefulness of the government bureaucracy.

  2. money makes the world go round!!!

  3. Congress won't enact more legislation to protect the country we all share because Congress, like the Presidency, is ruled by special interest groups with large piles of money.

Until the American people can demonstrate that:

    a) there is money to be made in recycling and environmental preservation, and b) that we are fed up with the lack of leadership and unwillingness to make the hard decisions for the common good, our elected leaders will never enact or enforce meaningful legislation.

  4. There are too many Republicans in Congress for tax increasing legislation that mandates recycling to pass.  Besides its going to be done at the local level anyway, and even if Democrats had a more lopsided control of Congress they're too busy figuring out what to do with the Iraq tar baby to design a recycling program at the Federal level for implementation at the local level.

  5. If congress had not financed Bush's immoral war. there would be more money in this country for many things, including the environment, and how to help solve its problems!

Recycling is a very good start, but is done at the local level!

  6. One reason is that it's not cost effective in every location in the country.  It is up to municipalities to do this.  I believe the Federal government does provide incentives to municipalities to encourage them to enact these programs, but you really can't expect some farmer in Western Kansas to sort out their trash when it would consume more energy to transport the stuff to a recycling plant than would be saved by recycling.

  7. It costs money for the government, and everyone is just too lazy to do it.

  8. It is easier said than done. To recycle, companies have to be formed to handle the recycled material. After the glass, plastic and newspapers are picked up for recycling, the items have to be separated to make sure they are sent to the proper company to be made into something. It is also a very expensive process.
