Why won't facebook allow me to change my name. Wanted to put my "surname" plus my nee surname but has been ?

rejected. Anyone know why. My friends have done this so not sure why mine is a problem.

You could type it as your middle name under the account section.

Or you can type your full former name where either the new or old name can be found through facebook search by anybody.
