Why won't it show that my friends are online when they are?

If by "it", you mean Yahoo! 360, then the offline and online status refers to the person's use of Yahoo! Messenger (http://messenger.yahoo.com ). If they've logged into Yahoo! Messenger, then the emoticon by their name or avatar will light up to yellow.

However, whether you can see that happen depends on the IM permissions that they've set in 360. Also, they can make themselves "invisible" - so they can be using Y!Messenger, but appear offline to everyone. See http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/360/per... for more information.
