Why won't my 82 toyota pickup start?

I have clean fuel, a clean carb, spark, and it turns over just fine... I have checked the distributor and cap as well... All seems to be in order but it won't start.

  1. Since you've already determined it's getting spark, I'd start tracing the fuel. You might try priming the carburetor to see if it turns over.

  2. its broke!

  3. maybe bc its 26 years old

  4. If it won't start, all can't be well. An engine needs a few things to run. Fuel, air, spark, and the proper timing. You can check if you have a spark by holding a spark plug wire close to the engine block. Wear a glove so you don't get zapped. If there's no spark, it's the points or electronic module, or the ignition coil, or one or more ignition cables. It could also be the starting bypass resistor. Unlikely though, If there's spark, you can pour a VERY LITTLE BIT of fuel into the carburetor. It may start, but die right away. That means it's not getting enough fuel which would be the fuel filter or fuel pump, or a carb problem. If it still does nothing, you may have a broken timing belt, or the belt jumped. This is pretty basic so I'm guessing you may want to just take it to the shop. I just like typing.

  5. check to see if your gas pump turns on

  6. Hmm well turns over.. or cranks?

Well if you are getting spark, then your fuses are good from your starter to the plugs are good too..  you are checking for spark from the plug itself?  or are you putting a spark checker into the boot?  Did you check all the plugs?  Have you checked  to see if you are getting fuel?  Have you checked the voltage regulator? It is probably ok if you are getting spark.. but maybe you aren't getting enough spark.  its usually only a few dollars to replace anyways.  check the gap for your plugs too just to be sure.  Did you check your fuel filter.. is that good?

Carb adjusted right and air filter good?  You checked to see if the choke opens up when you are trying to start? If you arent getting the right fuel/air mixture ratio the fuel wont combust, or you would get low power and your car would eat gas more than normal.

Have you checked your oxygen sensor?  Alot of cars I had had the check engine light on.. and wouldnt start. replaced the oxygen sensor and they fired up.  Sometimes a bad oxygen sensor can prevent a car from starting... sometimes.

Make sure the wires are in the correct firing order.  I put my wires back on once in the wrong order and it kept cranking and even acted like it wanted to start but just kept making a pretty loud poofing/popping type noise.

If you are getting enough spark, fuel. and have the right fuel/air ratio and your wires are on in the right firing order...

then perhaps its could be the timing is off..  or the chain/belt is broken or slipping?

Possibly maybe you know someone enrolled in a local college for auto mechanics?   I know a school around me that has a program.. and you can get your car fixed.. for free labor... all you got to do is supply the parts.

Also check out your library.. and get a Haynes or Chilton manual and use those to troubleshoot also.  Good luck!

  7. I'd be cracking a fuel line at the motor and making sure your getting fuel there (i've had an airlock before that stopped my old hilux awhile ago).. and you have ignition power from the key switch...
