I'm trying to play a movie I downloaded off the internet and the sound works, but not the video. I just shows designs and graphics according to the sound, the visualizations when you play an MP3. I know the file plays the video right, it's definitely in my WMP because I tried it with another video and it did the same thing. Anyways, would could be the problem? Thank you

  1. well, we need more info. There are many types of formats for video out there, and even if it seems to be playing well, you might have to download a plug in. For example, I had some matroska files that I was not able to play with media player or any other player.

The extension would not displayed, so I did the following in windows XP:

go to my computer and double click

    double click the C:

select Tools and then select Folder Options

    select the View tab

    from Advance settings

select the uncheck Hide extensions for known files types

    click ok

I was able to see the extension as .mkv

after doing some research in the internet, I found out that the reason why I was not able to play them was a missing codec called Combined Community Codec Pack (CCCP) I down loaded it form the main site and I was able to play after that. Another thing that looking at the extension of the file could help with is that it coul be that it just needs some other type of a media player,

  2. Install one only complete set of video codecs like Klite Mega Codec

    from : http://www.codecguide.com/

    Addition :

DivX is included also in this set.

    Hope it helps,

    HSP

  3. you are probably trying to play an .avi which is not supported by WMP.

i suggest downloading either the divx codec (http://www.divx.com) or VLC Player (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/)

  4. not the correct format of video. You may try k-lite and have better luck.

Some people record or upload a video wrong and seperate the video from the sound.

  5. The short and best answer is Download VLC Player does all my movies and music in whatever shape or form

  6. Unfortunately we can\t uninstall WMP, because it is part of windows or vista. You can however ignore it and never use it. It is the worse player there is.

You need a player that can play all video files, dvd, cd, audio

Gomplayer is free and has its own codecs

Just go to preferences  -- others  --  select all

    File Types   -   Codec

  7. You need to download and install the appropriate video codec.

A codec is short for "coder/decoder" and the use of these programs allows for movie files to be shrunk in size considerably.

Most movies you download are going to be encoded using one of these programs.

The top few listings are for a program called "k-Lite Codec Pack". It is a free, spyware free program that will install all the possible codecs required to play any media file out there.

    The Basic version is fine.
