Why won't my Yamaha RX-V663 amp connected via HDMI cable to my hi def TV produce the TVs sound?

The amp and tv are correctly connected via the hdmi cable. If I plug cables from the tv into the amp's cd input sound is reproduced when cd is selected as source on the amp. Shouldn't both sound and image be reproduced through the amp from the one "source" when connected via hdmi?

  1. I have heard and read that HDMI cable isn't always up to what it is advertised to be. That is HDMI is supposed to carry both video and audio but does not always follow that rule. If it is not carrying the the audio portion to the receiver my suggestion would be to leave the HDMI connected for the video portion and connect a either a coaxial or optical cable to carry the audio portion of the signal. You may even have to diconnect the HDMI cable for a component cable depending on how your TV and receiver sets it's priorities.

  2. I think the problem you are having is based on you trying to hook an HDMI input on your tv to transmit out to your receiver.  I think all TVs only have HDMI inputs and no outputs.  Secondly, I am not sure if the RX-V663 is pass-through only.  It might act as a HDMI switcher and not take any of the audio and only pass it through to the TV.

  3. Some TV's have a setting where you can choose to send video only thru HDMI. Your TV is probably set that way so just change it in the menu settings.

But where's the original audio source coming from? A cable box, dvd player, antenna? Here's an example on how I would connect things:

Cable box to receiver via HDMI

    Receiver to TV via HDMI

This way your source audio is going straight to the receiver and the receiver is sending the video to the TV.
