Why won't my chihuahua bark?

Question

I have a 3 1/2 months old chihuahua, he is a male, and he is ACTIVE!!!

He loves to run around, l**k, jump, bite, etc. But he won't bark!!! I know for a fact that chis are known for their crazy personality, which include endless barking and SPARTAN-like attitude! he is not traumatized and he doesn't have diseases. I'm trying to MAKE him bark, because we want him to do that when strangers come by. We recently had a burglary so we're trying to make him bark when people come. Help!

Lol, be careful what you wish for!

Anywho, I taught my dog how to *speak* easily. As long as your dog is food motivated you can pretty much teach them anything.

I started with cheese. I sat my dog infront of me and said *speak* showing her the cheese. If she didn't make any noise or speak. I ate the cheese infront of her.

Now a dog who LOVES food will get frustrated with you- especially if its over something really yummy. And eventually they will make a sound. Whether its a whine or bark. The second they make any sound. Give them the cheese.

Keep doing this until your dog fully understands *speak*. It won't take more than a few times of you eating the cheese or yummy treat for them to catch on lol.

Good luck...make sure you teach *quiet* as well or you'll be in for it lol

You must give him time to develop. I can only wish more Chihuahuas were similar to your own. He may never bark. Some dogs prefer not to.

my male chihahua is now 1 year old, and when he was a baby(until he was like 4ish-5ish months) he would NOT bark. but now whenever someone puts their key in our door, he starts going crazy!! he's the best dog, no one would ever come in without us knowing. just give him a little bit, also does he cry or whine? because if not you may want to see about his vocal chords.

my dog had the exact same problem he right now is a 5 moth old chihuahua male. He probably feels protected  so he doesn't need to bark. to get my dog to bark for the first time I had to make sure it was a surprise then make a really loud noise

I know a lot of people who would give their right arm for a chihuahua that doesn't bark.  LOL

Give him time.  He is still a baby.  He will bark when he is ready.  Then you will write asking how to make him stop.  LOL

Some pups find their bark a little late. One of my Dachshunds didn't bark for the first time until she was 4 months old, and they are easily one of the barkiest breeds out there. He will start barking eventually, and then you'll miss those quiet days!

Get an alarm and leave your poor dog alone!

My dogs don't ever stop yapping from a possum to a neighbor to a squirrel. They are always yapping and I wish they didn't.

Honestly, save yourself the hassle and get an alarm.

Your Chihuahua will not deter a burglar

and neither will you if you hear them!

Be thankful!!!  Alot of puppies don't actually learn to bark til later in their puppy stages - and when that occurs, you'll think back and ask yourself, "why did I ask that!"

I have 3 Pomeranians - they bark at their shadows, or reflections in the glass and or if they even hear a dog barking on the television.  Dogs bark for many reasons and it is something innate - go with the flow, he'll learn his place in life trust me and barking is one of them...

if you want a guard dog you might have wanted bigger dogs. anyway, you might want to take him to guard dog classes or encourage him by saying "speak!" very excitedly. you might want the people to seem like a bad thing to him so do something he hates when people are around but dont put anyone in danger. hope i helped! :]
