Question:

Why won't my desktop and taskbar appear?

I recently had a friend install Limewire on my computer, Limewire took over my computer and I downloaded Spyware Doctor, and registered for it to clean my computer. It cleaned my computer, I shut it down so it could delete the rest and be normal upon restart and went to bed. I get home from school and start my computer and uninstall the Spyware Doctor. I shut it down again and restarted it later, and all I get is my wallpaper. I wait a couple of minutes and a folder appear with 'Desktop', but I cannot access anything else I would normally from the taskbar...

Does anyone have a solution to this without taking my computer to get it fixed, my mother would be furious, and its really agrivating nonetheless.

Thanks!

  1. Format should always be a last resort.

It looks like you messed up your operating system. You can repair it and usually the auto repair feature is easier to use. But you will need the Windows installation CD.You will have to go through something like an installation process. When it detects that an OS is currently on the hard disc, you will be asked whether you want to repair the existing OS or install a new one. Do the repair. ALL your files will be intact. You just need to install the drivers.

  2. the only solution is,

get a windows xp or operating system install CD for the os you have got on your PC and overwite the system files so that deleted files will be again put in the system and taskbar would work again before your mom is back from party :D

    Good luck dear

  3. Sound like your PC is manifest by various memory hog programs causing your CPU to get busy at 100%..(that's why you're experiencing slow startup). I recommend you do a disk cleanup.  First you do is boot your computer in 'Safe Mode' (press F8, choose "safe mode").  In Windows,  choose Program>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Cleanup.  Run the clean up to free up junks.  After that you need to run anti-virus to clean up for any spyware/malware/adware.. AVG is free antivirus. LavaSoft also has free AdAware.  Google and download them.

  4. Not the answer you are looking for, however when ever you download off the Internet you should always save  first so you can then run a scan on the file to see if it is safe or not.

By simply running the file you are downloading you open your computer to every possible virus there is out there, because unfortunately the people who create these viruses will take all kinds of measures to infect your computer with any possible means.

Limewire for all good intentions is a good place for people to place a virus hidden in a file to infect your computer.

I always will try to browse the host you are wanting to download from to see what elas they have to offer and if you cant browse them then don't download  from them as i think they may have something to hide.

  5. Try CTRL+ALT+DEL and going into processes.

    Do you see explorer.exe running?

If not, then that's the problem. Just start a new process and type in explorer.exe.

If it is there, then is the Taskbar hidden?

If you can see a small stub of the taskbar, it may be set to "Auto-hide the taskbar" mode.

The Spyware Doctor could be a virus too.

I recommend installing AVG (free) and scanning.

If you can't find any problems other than that, however, you may have to reformat, I'm afraid.

I've seen instances where explorer.exe keeps restarting, and the only solution has been to reformat.

You need your Windows CD to do this.

Make sure to back up all your data.

    Hope I helped.
