Question:

Why won't my dog run?

I have a toy poodle, and he is the sweetest and friendliest little dog there is. He loves to play around the house, and will chase after toys at top speed. But when I take him out for a walk, he won't run! He will trot as fast as his little legs will go, but refuses to break out into a run. I don't get it!

This is frustrating, because I use my walks for cardio, for me and the dog together. I will walk quickly for about 15 minutes to warm up, but when I am ready to jog, he doesn't keep up! He might trot a little faster, but that's it. I KNOW he can run, he does it inside the house all the time! Why won't he run with me outside?

I have also considered that he might be too tired to run after 15 minutes of walking, but even when he starts out fresh, he won't break into a run. I have tried everything from excitedly encouraging him to dragging him behind me. Nothing works.

Please help me! I want to be able to have a jogging buddy!

  1. You should put it down.

  2. Toy dogs have a very difficult time keeping up with a jogging person - And running does put a strain on a small dog's tiny little legs.

Walk with him, as he needs the exercise, but when you jogging, it's best to leave him at home - sorry.

  3. it may be such a thing that he doesnt like the feeling of the pavment on his paws. or he only likes to run on "his schedule" who know for sure? those are my best answers! hope this helped!

  4. some dogs don't like to run..sorry

  5. you might have to get another dog to jog with you

  6. He's got little legs...maybe get a bigger running partner and let the poodle hang out inside.

  7. Just drag him by his neck he'll soon keep up, I'm not even lying dogs have very strong necks.

Or a Harness is an excellent idea.

  8. A toy poodle is a small dog. I don't think he can keep up with you. He might also not like to go for a run.

They get enough exercise just running around the house.
