Why won't my hot tub heat?

When we first bought our new house it came with an older hot tub.

We have read the owners manual and have done exactly what it said to do. It first heated up to 104 then after a couple of days it started to cool down. when i first plug in the tub(with the thermostat turned all the way down) i hear a click, but when i try to turn the thermostat up it doesn't do anything no clicking nothing. the temp is now down to 89. I was wondering if it sounds like the thermostat or the heater? I would be greatfull if anyone could give me any input.

  2. Hello,

This sounds like an older hot tub with a clicking sound when you turn the thermostat up.  If it clicks it is working.  If it doesn't you need to replace it since that is the problem.  That older bulb style should cost no more then $42.00.  Be sure to order the correct diameter...1/4" or 3/8". and length of capillary.

Of course if you are getting the clicking it means you need the heater.  BUT!! You need to also make sure your Hi-Limit switch works.  do that by putting the probe into a super heated cup of water from your microwave.  When you hear it click you know it works.

Now all of the above is a mute point if it's all electronic.  If that's the case and you do not hear a clicking (demand for heat) when you turn up your thermostat, then it is your circuit board's relay not working.

  3. Always replace the cheep-est part first. And besides most heating problems or cooling problems (99%) are caused by faulty controls. Give the thermostat a double look and replace it.

    Good Luck
