Why won't my iTunes open?

1) I have a Mac. Whenever I click on iTunes a window pops up that says, "The file "iTunes Library" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes." I tried to update my iTunes by clicking on the blue apple and then software update but all my software is up to date. What do I do?

2) Why did iTunes replace popular songs, like American Boy, with those stupid "tribute" things?
