Why won't my itunes detect my ipod shuffle? this is my 2nd ipod that can't be read!!!

this is the second ipod shuffle i've bought because i thought the reason for this was because something was wrong with my first. i've installed the new itunes 7 version on both my desktop and laptop, and neither will read my ipod shuffle. i'm seriously getting pissed off at this point. what's the deal. it also isn't being detected under the "my computer" page. i've already gone on itunes, and there are not answers there either. am i doing something wrong or am i just gett f***ed over. this is driving me nuts. please someone help me out.

just reset it press menu and the center buttons at the same time until the apple appears.  Make sure your ipod is not connected to the computer when you do this
