Question:

Why won't my kitten use scented litter?

He's been pooping on the floor, so I've tried switching the litter a bunch of times and the only one he'll use is the cheap non-scented one. Also, after he's done using it, he'll come out and start huffing, why? :(

  1. i sold a kitten hu hated perfume, because he wasnt used to it. if u keep trying and perciver he mite com around but u could try Wood stove pellets are the absolute best litter to use. Not only do they totally remove the urine odor but they absorb the moisture, the pan dumps out dry and the best part? You can buy a 40 pound bag for about FOUR TO FIVE DOLLARS! It's the same compressed pine sawdust pellets as Feline Pine so anyone using that stop wasting your money! Nothing really kills p**p odor plus I don't want my cats to end up with poopy paws so I scoop any poops out daily. With seven cats and six litter boxes I find that the litter boxes need to be clean, or my cats won't be. Since the litter's so cheap I don't mind changing it often.

During cooler months you can find them at Home Depot, Lowes and other homestores and most grocery stores like Safeway, Fred Meyer and Albertsons stores. You can also find them year round at feed stores as farmers/horse owners use them in horse stalls as well.

  2. I would try the cheap stuff that says "dust free." That should keep his sniffles away.

  3. Well... to answer your question.... You're s**y... That's ALL there is to it...

  4. it stinks.

i dont like scented toilet paper, guess it is the same thing.

  5. Cats have very sensitive noses, and what smells good to us can be overpowering to them, especially if you use a covered litter box.  Most scented litters are perfumy as well, and cats certainly have a different opinion about what smells good and bad.  Keep using the unscented litter, as long as he's using that.

  6. Hi Ashley,  I understand why your cat doesn't like the scented litter, it smells gross.  I think it is very toxic to cats and should be banned.  I worked at a cat hotel and some of the cats would sleep in the litter pan, it scared me as I knew they would be breathing in those fumes and it can't be good for them.  I use unscented, all natural cat litter form dollar general and it only cost a dollar. God Bless!

  7. He  may have resptory problem or allergy.    Try adding  some  baking  soda if you concerned with smell and a brand that's not type  so dusty.

  8. It does not smell like dirt does, it stinks to the cat.

You may like it, but the cat may think he is poopin on your carpet if he poops in something that smells like that.

    Use the cheap litter.

He huffs because it was a bit of a workout to dig in the litter tray.

Hope this helps, and by the way, what is it with Mike N and you???

    Jane

  9. Cats are very picky creatures. My cat won't use the litterbox if he has to stand in it.

I"m not joking, he'll stand on the edges and go potty, and then scratch at the walls in order to "cover it up" lol When I put a hood on it to keep the smell down, he stopped using it all together.

I'd use a non-sented, low dust one as well. Baking soda is a great idea to keep smell down and remember to clean it out daily!
