Question:

Why won't my kittens let me sleep?

I have two 12 week old kittens who are very healthy and happy but have one annoying habit. At around 6am they start mewing outside my bedroom door until one of us gets up, then they either run in and start biting our feet or run away. If you feed them they just eat and start again straight after. This pattern continues roughly every half an hour until finally we give in and get up.

If this an attention thing please can you give me advice on how to stop it? Usually we have only gone to be about 3 hours before they start acting up and they get fed at bed time. They have plenty of toys to keep them occupied.

  1. put them in a room overnight far from your bedroom so you cant hear them in the morning and feed when u get up they will learn to go with your routine

  2. my cat does this i live in a block of flats to i usaly open my door run out with him and let him out its the only thing you can do other then grab them and bring them to bed with you maybe that will settle em down if you let them sleep on your bed or in your bedroom

  3. this used to happen to me...but my kitten used to sleep in the same room. it was horrible, specially the first 2 weeks or so. i still remember uff!!

all you have to do is ignore...

my kitten learnt that when we go bed its time to sleep... so he sleeps as well.(around 23.00). he does wake up in the middle of the night but doesnt distub us because he knows no1 is going to play with him at night...he plays with its toys and sleeps again.

at around 6 am hez awake... wanders around, goes toilet bla bla... then comes and give us a wake up call (comes to our face and purrs) he knows at 7.30 is breakfast time, so he waits for us at d kitchen door.

all you gotta do is ignore and they will soon realize that u wont do as you told. they will get used to a routine...so make up 1... like i have.

  4. They're probably bored.

Toys don't keeps kittens occupied for very long.

    They're like kids.

    They NEED attention.

And toys get boring very fast.

  5. Sorry but it won't make any difference what toys you have for them if it is your company they want they will keep this behaviour going until you get up!  That's how kittens/cats are.

When we first adopted our 2 from the RSPCA they were 8 months of age & at first they both slept all night on the bottom of our bed but after 2 weeks they started waking at 3am wanting us to get up. One of them was allowed outside after 3 weeks coz he really wanted to go outside & the other one went after 4 weeks. Now they can come in & out as they please. Most of the time they are indoors but they do like going out & they always ask to go out last thing at night too.  They stay out all night which you might have to think about doing with yours when they are older because not all cats like being kept indoors permanently.  Some people say you can keep cats indoors all the time but you might find that yours don't like it.

It might mean you will have to get a large carrier to put them in on a night time when they start wanting you to get up really early....like 3am but they should settle down as long as it is big enough for 2.

Cats are gorgeous creatures but the fact that they are nocturnal can cause some folks a few problems. Good luck & have fun with them x

  6. Have outside/garage pets

  7. My 12 week old kitten is exactly the same. At first she would get up about 2 hours before I needed to get up and start biting my feet and running around like crazy and playing with her toys. After a few days, she has gotten used to my schedule and pretty much leaves me alone until I get up. Think if you just continue to ingnore them until you are ready to get up, they will adjust themselves. They are at an age where they are pretty quick learners. Just don't give in. Right now they know you will, so they aren't going to bother to change.

  8. Cats are nochternal so they'll be more active at night and want you to play with them. Also it may be attention seeking. Don't open the door no matter how long they miow for, whether it be for hours. If you do open it then they'll think they can do it more and more. I know how hard it is - a cat we used to have did that a lot until we just ignored him no matter how long he miowed. After a while they'll realise you're not going to get up and will have to amuse themselves in another way. Perhaps you could leave them some toys and/or a scratchpost with a ball hanging off it for them to play with. Then they'll be less inclined to want you to get up.

  9. i would they r just trying to mess with you i think u should get some catnip and put it all over there favorite toy or get a well behave cat and see if they can learn something from it or you could give them alot of attention

  10. It is normal kitten behaviour.  They are like babies and need to learn the routine.  and you have to put up with a few weeks of disturbed sleep while they learn it.

Don't give in.  Ignore their meowing, even though it's annoying when you want to sleep. And don't get up until you are ready.  When you do get up give them lots of fuss and attention.

They will soon learn and they will grow out of it.
