Why won't my lap top recognize my wireless router? Please read all info.?

I recently purchased a linysys router for my home so that my daughter can use her lap top at home while I use the internet ( broadband connection). Her lap top is not recognizing the wireless connection when I click on detect nearby wireless connection ( my itouch picks up the signal fine). She has an existing dial up connection that keeps overriding the router. How can I fix this problem? or how can I set up the wireless so that her lap top recognizes it. Is there a way to go back to the set up options and add a device ( her lap top) to the router? I bypassed it during the set up process!

  1. I had the same issues with my new laptop. We believe it's because the router doesn't support Windows Vista but we need to call Verizon (it's a DSL connection) to find out. I think to get rid of the dial up you disable it somehow but I'm not good at that kind of stuff. But what we're probably going to do is buy a small router that works with Vista to connect to the one we have now so it can respond to the laptop.

There is a way to add a device. Start, control panel, network and internet, network and sharing, then on the side where it says tasks click setup a connection or network, manually connect to a wireless network, then you should be able to set up your router. If this doesn't work, try calling the company and ask them what you should do.

  2. If you are not going to use the dial up connection anymore then delete that through Control Panel then Network Connections if using XP.  Then also in Control panel, use the Wireless Network Setup wizard to set up the new connection.

  3. You need to view your network connections.  Sometimes you have to go through "My Computer" to get there depending on how you're configured.

Once there click on "Create a new connection" and follow the directions there.  You should get set up with no trouble.

If your router has a WEP code you must set up her computer to give the correct password to connect.

I disagree with C on deleting your dial-up connection.  If you're DSL or Cable goes out you can still use dial-up to connect if you have to.  That is if your provider has a dial-up line you can call if that happens.  That's a good thing to find out before your high-speed goes down.

The operating system should have nothing to do with it.  My wife has a Vista laptop computer and connected with no trouble.

  4. ok well first is forst... is the wireless card on???

on the front of the computer, there whould be a switch taht says wireless or have a picture of a tower. switch it on then try to detect the AP again

  5. Here's the fix.  This is often overlooked by even professionals.

Go back into your Control Panel >  Network wizard, tell it to

    "Never dial-up a connection".
