Question:

Why won't my male and female birds take care of their eggs?

I have two birds, a male and a female. She has laid about 13 eggs, but she never laid either of them in her nesting box and she never sat or had anything to do with the rest. She just laid them on the floor of my room or the cage. At first she pecked them open and drank the yoke inside, then she pecked all of the others open. Is there something wrong?

  1. im not sure u can i ask a vet for info

  2. 13 eggs is not normal for any bird to lay , second the reason she is pecking the eggs open is she is calicum depelted you need to supply a cutter bone mineral block and add e xtra calicum to her diet ,  and third are you sure you have a male and female/

  3. First of all what kind of birds are they?  You need to take the nest box away so she'll stop laying eggs before she becomes egg bound from the calcium loss.

The nest box is only causing problems because it triggers egg production, even though your hen is not interested in nesting.  If she was interested in reproducing she would have explored the nest box, both birds would have prepared the box, then mated and then she would have laid the eggs inside the nest box.

Do the poor hen a favor and get rid of the box before it kills her.

  4. Well, without knowing what kind of birds you have I'll

    just go on then basics.

First, are you sure one is a male? Some birds will lay

eggs even in a single gender environment (finches

    for example)

If you are sure you have a male, then my guess

    would be improper diet.

For futher help, I'll need to know what kind of birds you

    have.

  5. There may be something wrong. :(

I think she dosen't know how to take care of the eggs. You can try to keep them warm and see what happens.

if you really cannot handle give it to the SPCA.
