Question:

Why won't my memory upgrade fit?

I just got 2gig memory upgrade kit, 2X1024 ddr2 pc6400. They don't fit the expansion slots. If I remove the original memory (2X1024 ddr2 pc5400) and replace them with the new ones, they fit. The factory memory will not fit in the expansion slots either. The slots themselves look the same, but are different colors, purple for the original, and orange for the expansion, and the clips on the ends are shaped slightly different, but the dimensions and location of the notch are the same. The memory goes in, but will not seat, and the clips will not close. WTF? Motherboard is ECS MCP61P-AM. Anyone heard of this before? Also, if use pc6400 and pc5400 at the same time will it run them all at pc5400 speed?

  1. You may have to press harder. Your MB supports 4gb of RAM. Try buying 2 sticks of 2gb RAM.

Yes they will run the slower speed if you mix the 2 sets.

  2. If those slots truly do accept extra memory, realize that they will require a considerable amount of force to seat, and may require more than you would like to apply. Be sure the clips are open, then press down evenly along the whole chip. It 'should' seat. Be careful not to snap the chip. If you're truly sure that even though they are memory slots, the cards won't seat, then call either the manufacturer of the memory or the manufacturer of your computer/motherboard.

    Hope I could help! :)
