So both of my kitchen lights went out probably within 1 month of each other. When we opened the cover we discovered that they are round bulbs, as in circular tubes in a circle shape. Anyway we bought new ones to replace them and they dont work. We have tried GE and some other brand. They are the same size, plug fits fine, yes the power is on and the circuit is on, and the switch. I have 2 hunches...that the bulb has to be the same brand as the fixture (the old ones are the same brand) or that the wires in the ceiling are damaged. What else could it be and how do i fix it?

  1. it is one of these two things

no power to the fixture or ballast is bad

if you can hook a different light fixture up in its place that you know works. if it comes on it is a bad ballast

if it does not come on contact a electrician there is a problem with the circuit

  2. Because I'm an electrician I will be really technical in my answer. That type of fixture SUCKs. I don't know who ever thought that round tube were a good idea. There are too many little thing that can be wrong. It could be the ballast, the starter, the contacts, the bulbs (I know you have new round bulbs but seals on circular bulbs can leak)

    He is my advice:

It is time to update the lighting in your kitchen. A nice new fixture will be faster and easier to install. I bet you can find on that looks better as wall.

  3. Remove the bulbs, then remove the metal plate to expose the wiring, starter and the ballast. Check all for any shorts or smell. If any of these have a burnt odor, replacement is necessary for light to work.

  4. Are the bulbs glowing?

If so you probably need to change the starter too (the little barrel shaped thing). Make sure you get the right kind as there are about three different types for a range of wattages.

Its very unlikely that it needs to be the same brand as the fitting.
