Why won't my printer cartridge be read?

I just bought 3 new colored cartridges and I took off MOST of the plastic part - does it have to be completely off it? (There's only a little bit left [it's hard to take off D:<!]

What model printer do you have? Are you getting any error message? Is it &quot;replace cartridge&quot; or &quot;cartridge cant be recognized&quot; or is that color just not printing? A little more info goes a long way to diagnosing the problem.
